|The mountain of Meron is the highest one in the Galil. It is more then 4,000 feet high. It gets its fame on account of the many great Kabbalists and Talmudic sages buried here.|
The large domed building is the burial place of Rebbi Shimon bar Yochai and his son Rabbi Elazar. Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai is famous for being the Author of the 'Zohar' in the 2nd century. Rabbi Shimon and his son Rabbi Elazar were hiding for 13 years in a cave where they merited frequent visits of Elijah the Prophet who revealed to them the deepest secrets of the Kabbalah. All year round you will find people from all over the world praying in Meron, and many of them will tell you of the special experience of praying in this holy place.
In Meron There are also the grave sites of the great Talmudic sages Hillel and Shamai, as well as their students. Up to the right is the burial place of Rabbi Yochanan Hasandlar.
Here one can also see the remains of one of the oldest synagogues in the country. It dates back to the time of the 2nd Temple. It has three entrance gates all facing in the direction of Jerusalem.
Hundreds of thousands of people come here on 'Lag Ba'omer' (a month after Passover) where they celebrate the Hilulah – the day of the passing of Rabbi Shimon. They sing, dance, light bonfires, feast and study Kabbalah. Many have the custom to give their three year old boys their first haircut at this holy spot.
