Danielle and Michael Chouraqui were both born in Algiers, Algeria. Without knowing one another their families left for France on the very same day of 1962 – she to Bordeaux, he to Paris. A search to deepen their Jewish roots drove each of them separately to visit Israel in 1985, and it was there that they finally met – by the Kotel (Western Wall) on the festival of Simchat Torah.
The couple were married back in France in 1986 and moved to Israel the following year, settling in the mystic city of Safed where they still live with their three children. Art Inspired Above - Created Here on Earth Collaborating fully on all their work, Danielle and Michael Chouraqui create some of the most original and inspiring work being produced in Safed today. With themes drawn from the core of Jewish sacred texts, steeped in Jewish life and Kabbalah roots, their art expresses both the contemporary meaning and the eternal nature of Judaism. Painting in the studio they named the Water Carrier's Gallery, the Chouraquis have exhibited in New York and Zurich, and their works adorn the homes of collectors in North and South America, Europe and Asia.
